Full Range of Motion vs Partial Reps for Hypertrophy

For years, gym advice on range of motion was wonderfully simple: use full range or you are cheating. Then lengthened partials entered the chat, lifters started doing half reps from the stretched position, and suddenly every bloke with a cable stack was conducting “stretch-mediated hypertrophy research” between sets.
So what actually builds more muscle: full range of motion or partial reps?
The practical answer is that full range of motion remains the best default for most exercises and most lifters. It develops strength across a broader movement, makes progression easier to standardise and generally performs very well for hypertrophy. However, partial reps are not automatically useless. Partials performed in the lengthened portion of an exercise can be highly effective and, in some situations, may produce similar muscle growth to full reps.
The important detail is where the partial occurs, why you are using it and whether it is planned—or whether the weight is simply too heavy and your range is shrinking one centimetre at a time.

What counts as full range of motion?
Full range of motion means moving through the largest controlled and pain-free range that is appropriate for the exercise and your anatomy. It does not mean forcing every joint into an extreme position or copying somebody else’s exact depth.
For a squat, full range might mean descending as deeply as you can while maintaining control, foot pressure and a stable torso. For a dumbbell curl, it means reaching a long elbow position at the bottom and completing the curl without turning it into a front raise. For a chest press, it means lowering to a safe, repeatable depth rather than cutting the rep short as soon as the set becomes difficult.
The key word is repeatable. If your first rep uses a deep range and your final five reps become progressively shallower, you have not necessarily discovered an advanced hypertrophy technique. You may simply be losing position.
What are partial reps?
Partial reps use only part of an exercise’s available range. They can occur in different sections:
- Lengthened partials: performed around the stretched portion of the target muscle, such as the bottom half of a preacher curl or the lower portion of a calf raise.
- Shortened partials: performed near peak contraction, such as the top section of a lateral raise or leg curl.
- Mid-range partials: performed through the middle section, often where leverage is strongest.
Lumping all partial reps together creates confusion because these variations can load the muscle very differently. The recent interest in partials is largely about long-muscle-length training, not random half reps.
What does the research say?
Systematic reviews generally support full range of motion as a reliable choice for strength and muscle growth. A 2021 meta-analysis found that full-range training tended to produce greater strength gains and lower-body hypertrophy than partial-range training overall, although the evidence was not equally strong for every muscle group or exercise.
More recent reviews add an important nuance: partial reps performed at longer muscle lengths may be more effective than partials performed in the shortened portion, and they can sometimes compete surprisingly well with full-range training. A 2023 systematic review concluded that full range and lengthened-partial training generally outperform shortened partials for hypertrophy-related outcomes.
Research in trained lifters has also reported similar upper-body muscle growth between full-range repetitions and lengthened partials in some exercises. That does not prove lengthened partials are universally superior. It does show that “partial rep” is not a synonym for “bad rep.”
The fairest summary is:
- Full range remains the most broadly supported all-purpose method.
- Training at long muscle lengths appears important for hypertrophy.
- Lengthened partials can be effective when an exercise loads the stretched position well.
- The evidence is still exercise-specific, so there is no reason to replace every full rep in your program.
Why might the stretched position matter?
A muscle can experience high mechanical tension at different points in a movement, but some exercises challenge it most strongly while it is lengthened. That combination—high tension at a longer muscle length—may provide a potent growth stimulus.
Consider a preacher curl. Near the bottom, the elbow flexors are relatively lengthened and must produce force from a disadvantaged position. A controlled partial that stays in this lower section can keep the biceps working where the exercise is most demanding. By contrast, tiny reps near the top may feel like a savage squeeze while providing less tension through the rest of the range.
This does not mean “more stretch equals more gains” without limit. Forcing a joint beyond a controllable range, bouncing under load or chasing painful stretch sensations is not clever programming. The target is productive muscular tension, not trying to separate your tendons from the rest of the group chat.
When full range should be your priority
You are learning an exercise
Beginners benefit from building consistent technique and strength across the whole movement. Full reps make it easier to learn positions, compare performance and notice when form changes.
Strength through the whole range matters
If your goal includes improving a squat, press, pull-up or another measured lift, you need practice through the range used in that movement. Partial reps can overload a section, but they do not fully replace specific practice.
Your range keeps shrinking unintentionally
If heavier loads automatically produce shorter reps, reduce the weight. Progress is not progress when the exercise changes every week. Adding 10 kilograms while removing half the movement is creative accounting.
The exercise already loads the muscle well throughout
Many exercises provide useful tension across a broad range. There is no need to complicate them simply because partials are fashionable.
When lengthened partials can be useful
At the end of a full-range set
One of the easiest applications is to perform controlled full reps until you can no longer complete another clean repetition, then add two to five lengthened partials. This extends the set without pretending the partials were full reps.
This works best on stable movements such as machine presses, cable fly variations, preacher curls, leg curls, calf raises and some lateral raise variations. It is less appealing on a fatigued barbell squat where a failed partial can turn the rack into a crime scene.
When the shortened position limits the set
Sometimes you cannot complete the full movement even though you can still produce useful force in the stretched half. Lengthened partials allow you to continue loading that region for a few extra repetitions.
As a dedicated variation
Advanced lifters may program a lengthened-partial variation for a training block. The range must be clearly defined and tracked. Otherwise, every week becomes a different exercise and progression data becomes meaningless.
Exercise-by-exercise examples
Quads: squats and leg presses
Use the deepest controlled range your mobility and structure allow while keeping the target muscles loaded. Deep knee flexion can be valuable, but do not force depth by collapsing your pelvis or losing foot pressure. Bottom-half partials may be useful on a stable leg press or hack squat, but full reps should usually remain the foundation.
Hamstrings: Romanian deadlifts and leg curls
On Romanian deadlifts, prioritise a controlled range determined by hamstring tension and spinal position—not whether the plates touch the floor. On seated or lying leg curls, lengthened partials can work well after full reps because the machine provides stability.
Chest: presses and flyes
Use a comfortable deep range that keeps the shoulder stable. After full reps, controlled bottom-half partials on a machine press or cable fly can extend the set. Do not bounce out of the bottom or force an extreme stretch under heavy load.
Back: pulldowns and rows
Full reps help train scapular movement and strength through a broad range. Lengthened partials can be used from the stretched position on supported rows or pulldowns, but avoid turning them into loose torso swings.
Biceps, triceps and calves
Preacher curls are an obvious candidate for controlled lower-range partials. Overhead cable extensions load the triceps in a lengthened position and can suit partials near the stretched end. For calves, use a controlled bottom position and consider lower-half partials after full reps rather than bouncing through the middle.
How to program both methods
A simple approach for most lifters is:
- Perform your main compound exercises through a consistent full range.
- Use full range on most accessory work.
- Choose one or two stable exercises per session where lengthened partials make sense.
- Add two to five controlled partials after the final full-range set, or program one dedicated partial-rep set.
- Track full reps and partial reps separately.
For example, a chest session might include full-range dumbbell presses, full-range machine presses and cable flyes. On the final cable-fly set, complete 10 to 15 full reps, then add three controlled lengthened partials. That is enough experimentation. You do not need to turn the entire workout into half-rep theatre.
Common mistakes
- Using partials only to lift more weight: Load is useful only when the target muscle receives meaningful tension.
- Confusing discomfort with effectiveness: A strong stretch sensation is not proof of superior growth.
- Choosing unstable exercises: Partials taken to deep fatigue are safer and easier to standardise on machines and cables.
- Failing to define the range: Decide exactly where each rep starts and ends.
- Replacing everything at once: Keep most training stable so you can judge whether the change helps.

Are partial reps cheating?
Unplanned partials used to disguise failed full reps are poor tracking. Deliberately programmed partials are a legitimate training method. The difference is intent, execution and consistency.
Are lengthened partials better than full reps?
Not universally. Some studies show similar or potentially favourable hypertrophy outcomes, but full range has broader evidence and develops strength across more of the movement. Lengthened partials are best viewed as an additional tool.
Should beginners use partial reps?
Beginners should spend most of their time mastering full-range technique. A few controlled partials on simple machine exercises are not forbidden, but they are not necessary for early progress.
How many partial reps should I add?
Start with two to five after the final full-range set of a suitable exercise. More is not automatically better, especially when extra reps reduce recovery or irritate a joint.

Full range of motion is not outdated. It remains the most dependable default for building muscle, developing broadly useful strength and keeping your training measurable. Partial reps are not automatically junk, either. When performed in the lengthened portion, on a suitable exercise and with a clear purpose, they can add productive work.
