Cardio does not automatically destroy your strength or muscle gains. The concurrent training interference effect is real, but it is usually smaller, more specific and far more manageable than gym folklore suggests. You are not going to evaporate your squat because you went for a sensible jog.

The bigger issue is poor programming: too much hard endurance work, badly timed sessions, permanently cooked legs, inadequate food and recovery, or trying to peak for a powerlifting meet and a half marathon at the same time. That is not “cardio killing gains”. That is your calendar launching a hostile takeover.

What is concurrent training?

Concurrent training simply means developing endurance and strength within the same training period. That might involve lifting three days per week while running twice, combining bodybuilding with cycling, or preparing for a hybrid event that demands both strength and an engine.

Concurrent athletes need enough total energy, carbohydrate to support demanding sessions and protein to support repair and muscle retention. Chronic under-fuelling makes every form of interference worse. Sleep is equally glamorous and equally unavoidable.
