Running does not automatically kill muscle growth. Most lifters can combine running and resistance training successfully. The real issue is not cardio existing in the same postcode as your dumbbells. Running increases energy expenditure. If you add several sessions but keep food intake unchanged, body weight may fall. Losing weight too quickly can reduce training performance and make muscle retention or growth harder.

To protect your gains:

  • Eat enough total calories for your goal.
  • Consume roughly 1.6–2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day.
  • Use carbohydrates to support lifting and harder runs.
  • Replace fluids and sodium after sweaty sessions.

Cardio did not steal your gains if you added 400 calories of running and replaced them with one heroic blueberry.
