The practical answer: both methods can build muscle. Training close to failure matters, but reaching absolute failure on every set is not necessary. RIR becomes more useful when you practise it rather than guessing whatever number makes the logbook look impressive.

  1. Predict before stopping. When you think you are at 2 RIR, note it mentally.
  2. Occasionally test it. On a safe exercise, continue to technical failure and compare your prediction with reality.
  3. Use repeatable technique. If your range of motion shrinks every rep, your RIR estimate becomes meaningless.
  4. Track rep speed. A major slowdown often signals that you are approaching failure, although the pattern differs between exercises and people.
  5. Judge the target muscle. A set may end because grip, balance or cardio failed first.

Research suggests lifters generally estimate RIR more accurately when sets are closer to failure. In other words, distinguishing 1 RIR from 0 RIR is often easier than confidently separating 7 RIR from 9 RIR.

A Simple Weekly Strategy

You do not need to marry one method. Use both.

For a typical hypertrophy exercise:

  • Set 1: around 3 RIR.
  • Set 2: around 2 RIR.
  • Set 3: around 1 RIR.
  • Optional final set: 0–1 RIR if the exercise is safe and recovery is good.

This approach keeps early-set performance strong while allowing high effort where it is most useful. You can also hold all sets at roughly 2 RIR and progress load or reps over time. Consistency beats theatrical suffering.
